Das Seelenhaus - Hannah Kent

Hello Lovelies,

today I want to talk about Das Seelenhaus ( Burial Rites ) by Hannah Kent.

It was published by Droemer in 2014. I read the german edition.

This novel is set in Iceland in the early beginnings of the 19th century.

This book is part memoir, part criminal story and part society study. Honestly I thought this was just a criminal story but I was wrong. It is a slow read and you surely need some time to get to know all the characters in the book,

Agnes, our main character, is a handmaid. She is far to self concious to be liked in that time. People say bad things about her just because she uses her head and bows to noone. Therefor it came to no surprise when people assume the worst from her when her master and another man was killed.

We learn to know more about Agnes, her past and how her life was on that island and kind of like her somehow but some people already made up their minds about her and so she was executed.

This book is based on real events.

Did you read this book? Did you like it? Tell me in the comments.

Take care,
Amanda
